Highgate Cemetery, London.

Photo Walk, Monday 9th June 2025.

Highgate Cemetery consists of nearly forty acres of tombs, monuments and headstones with
approximately 170,000 people buried in 53,000 graves. Opened in 1839, Highgate soon
became the fashionable place for burials and given the Victorian attitude towards death this
led to the creation of a wealth of Gothic tombs, memorials and mausoleums which make for
fascinating subject matter for the photographer.

The day is designed as a relaxed walk, with plenty of time to spend shooting at your leisure with one of the countries top landscape photographers on hand for advice and help. Limited to just five participants for a small, friendly and informal day’s shoot. At the end of the day, you will be encouraged to send Jeremy your favourite five images for critique and feedback.

At the turn of the Twentieth Century the fashion for burials slowly began to change and the demand for elaborate plots at Highgate declined. In 1960 The London Cemetery Company was declared bankrupt and the cemetery fell into terminal decline.

It is this ‘terminal decline’ that is possibly of most interest to the photographer. Overgrown graves and crumbling tombs make for wonderful subjects. Although the grounds are maintained by The Friends of Highgate Cemetery there are still acres of overgrown tombs to be explored as well as some quite famous tombs such as that of Carl Marx.

Shooting tombstones and graveyards can lend itself to black and white photography and especially infrared photography and this will be the main theme of the day. However, that is not to say colour images do not work and of course you will be more than welcome to shoot the subject in your own style and vision.
